Same-sex couple behind California lawsuit has filed for divorce

Posted on February 20th, 2012 No Comments

The lesbian couple responsible for the filing of a lawsuit against the state of California regarding same-sex marriage has filed for divorce. The women have been deemed advocates in the fight for gay and lesbian civil rights in California.

The lawsuit triggered the downfall of the ban against same-sex marriage. The women, who had dated for 14 years prior to the uplifting of the ban, were among the first couples to officially marry in California.

They have now decided to go their own ways, and are filing for divorce. They don’t want this divorce filing being labeled as a gay divorce, because they believe their divorce is just as normal as everyone else who files for one. The women respect one another and hope to be friends in the future.

America’s divorce rate drops 5 percent

Posted on February 14th, 2012 No Comments

According to the United States Census Bureau, the overall divorce rate in the country has dropped by five percent since 1996.

Economic factors may contribute to this decline, because the financial recession may deter some couples from officially divorcing. Divorces can cost a large amount of money for both parties involved.

The state with the highest divorce rate is Maine, with 14 percent. Both New Jersey and New York have the lowest divorce rates in the country, each with 8.5 percent.

Judge reduces child support payments for Terrell Owens

Posted on February 7th, 2012 No Comments

Terrell Owens will no longer be obligated to pay high amounts in child support due to a new ruling by a judge. The judge determined that Owens’s current financial situation was reason enough to alter his monthly payments.

In the past, Owens has paid as much as $20,000 a month for each child. He has four children with four separate women. Several of these women took Owens to court claiming that he was not paying the correct amount of child support. Terrell Owens used to play in the National Football League, and was able to afford these large child support payments because of his large salary.

Owens is no longer playing in the NFL, and without that contract he no longer has the amount of money he once had. His new child support payments have been reduced to an amount that is feasible to handle with his new income.

Study says divorce damages health at an earlier age

Posted on January 30th, 2012 No Comments

A study has just been published in the journal, Social Science & Medicine, that shows a relationship between the age of someone getting divorced and poor health complications.

There were 1,282 participants in the study whose lives were examined for 15 years by sociologists at Michigan State University. Different aspects of their lives were assessed including; age when divorce occurs, health complications and age, and health relating to marriage success. The results determined that the younger someone goes through a divorce, the more likely they are to experience health problems.

The researchers involved in the study think that more resources need to be available to younger individuals in order for them to cope with the terms of divorce. They also suggest that the reason why people can deal with divorce better at an older age is due to their developed managing skills.

After seven years of marriage and four children, Heidi Klum has decided to separate from Seal and plans on filing for divorce in the near future.

The couple has been inseparable since 2004, when Heidi was pregnant with her first daughter from a previous relationship. Seal stayed by Heidi’s side throughout her pregnancy and even took on father responsibilities for her daughter. They became engaged a year later and their first child together shortly followed. The couple had three children together and in 2009, Seal adopted Heidi’s first child.

Heidi and Seal were constantly portrayed in the media as a loving and doting couple that renewed their wedding vows every single year of their marriage. They were always photographed on family outings and vacations and never had anything bad to say about one another. Heidi, as well as Seal, have both told the media that the separation rumors are true and that they are focusing their efforts on their children at this time.

California woman connected with daughter 77 years after adoption

Posted on January 16th, 2012 No Comments

In 2006, a woman living in San Clemente, California was contacted by what would turn out to be her grandson. The man was seeking information on medical history because his mother was having heart problems. His mother turned out to be the woman’s daughter that she gave up for adoption 77 years prior.

That phone call was the most amazing gift the woman could have ever received. She had been searching for her daughter for years and had nearly given up the chance of ever seeing her again. The woman, now 100-years-old, had been sexually assaulted as a teenager and became pregnant as a result. She was not able to care for the child and chose adoption.

The girl grew up in a great environment and always knew that she was adopted. She married and had four children of her own. She was pleasantly surprised to learn that her biological mother was still living and they met shortly after that phone call. The two have kept in touch ever since and the woman has been able to meet all of her grandchildren.

Adoption can be a complicated process and it is important to understand all the facts. If you are considering adoption, please contact the San Diego adoption lawyers of Fischer & Van Thiel, LLP, by calling 760-722-7646 today.

Antoine Walker, a former NBA player who retired in 2008, currently owes over two years worth of child support payments to the mother of his 13-year-old daughter.

The ex-basketball player has been in a financial hardship and recently filed for bankruptcy. At one point in his career, Walker was worth $110 million but almost all of that money has been lost in gambling situations or bad real estate investments.

No prenup for Katy Perry and Russell Brand

Posted on January 4th, 2012 No Comments

The marriage between pop star, Katy Perry, and British comedian, Russell Brand, is coming to a close after 14 months.

The paperwork was filed by Brand’s lawyers on December 30,2011 claiming irreconcilable differences. Brand made a statement about the divorce, saying he will always care for Perry and that he is sure they will stay friends.

Several reports are stating that the couple, who dated for four months before tying the knot, did not have a prenuptial agreement in place. This could mean that all of their earnings during the marriage will be split evenly between them. Perry could possibly lose millions due to her much higher salary.

A prenuptial agreement is used to protect both people entering into the marriage if all doesn’t go according to plan. If you are getting married and are considering the possibility of a prenuptial agreement, please contact the San Diego prenuptial agreement lawyers of Fischer & Van Thiel, LLP by calling 760-722-7646 today.
